Find Your Why

When the why is big enough you will find your how

I’m currently reading Simon Sinek’s book Start With Why, which was recommended by a favorite motivational speaker of mine: Jay Shetty. I haven’t finished it yet, but the focus of the book is to teach businesses their identity should be centered around their Why first, then the How, then the What. He calls this, The Golden Circle.

The Golden Cirlce

I was thinking this book would be like Victor Frankl’s book “Man’s Search For Meaning”, but just rephrasing the same message. I was pleasantly surprised that it was not. In Man’s Search For Meaning, the message could be best summed up by a quote from Nietschze: “a compelling why will overcome almost any how”. To put this in context: despite overwhelming odds and crushing abuse, alot of people (including Victor Frankl) survived the concentration camps. All the ones who survived had a compelling why (ie. I have to live to see my parents/spouse/children), the ones who lost their Why gave up on life and died. I’m 100% not doing this book justice though, you all should read it when you have time.

Simon Sinek is telling us that if we get the message across to our customers that we have a compelling Why on why they should purchase (in my case rent) from us, they will identify with you and buy from you every time.

So, for all those businesses people out there: tell your customer your why, and they will be loyal to your brand and hopefully tell others about you and help your business grow!
